It is tempting to consider one of these parts in isolation.
However, this could be a mistake.
After all, the wrong choice can be devastating to the conformal coating production process as a whole and even worse, the reliability of your product.
I feel that to identify the best conformal coating material and application process there are several key factors that you need to consider that, if you are lucky, will add up to at least one sensible process choice.
Factors to be considered include:
Temperature operating range
International, customer or National Standards
Environmental considerations of the circuit board
Requirement to rework the conformal coating
Conformal coating material type
Application process considerations
Curing the conformal coating
National, State, Regional Legislation and Insurance
Nexus has highlighted six critical areas that affect coating production and reduce performance on the line. These are the machines, materials, staff, process control, upstream processes and customer requirements.
In a series of six articles over the next six weeks Nexus will attempt to highlight these six key areas for production and how the production line can be improved to achieve acceptable levels of defects.
This week Dr Lee Hitchens will consider the conformal coating material itself and how it affects the selective conformal coating production process.
Nexus are to hold a FREE conformal coating workshop in the Diamond SCH coating facility in Shenzhen China on the 17th October 2012.
Topics include Process Control of Conformal Coating : How do you keep control of your coating line and ensure your customer stays happy? this presentation addresses many of the process issues found on a conformal coating line and shows how to control these variables using measurement systems and the appropriate methods.
Want to control your conformal coating process? Watch this presentation.
This One-day workshop will be held at the Diamond SCH Conformal Coating Facility. The address is 3rd Floor, A5 Building, Tianrui Industrial Park, Fuyuan Road1, FuYong Town, Baoan District, Shenzhen, China.
Nexus are to hold a series of webinars on conformal coating topics in the Autumn of 2012.The series of four online conformal coating webinars will cover the following topics and each last 90 min. The first of the online training webinars will be:
Conformal Coating Guide to Design, Application & Reliability 12th November 2012
Conformal coating may be a new process to many people and its important to have a good grounding in the fundamentals before embarking on the use of coatings. An incorrect choice at the design stage can add significant cost to the product without the desired benefits. Correct selection of components and application techniques can significantly reduce cost by reducing or eliminating masking steps. A key step during design is to assess the effective reliability prior to going into full production.
Topics will include:
Why conformal coating is necessary
Types of material and their benefits
Design engineers check list Coating application methods
Testing product reliability
